XD Solutions Coordinated the F-35 Indirect Industrial Participation in Autonomous Land Systems
In 2020, XD Solutions was chosen as the Coordinator for F-35 Indirect Industrial Participation in Autonomous Land Systems technology area by the Finnish Ministry of Defence.
Under this mandate, XD Solutions established and led the Autonomous Land Systems Initiative (ALSI) consortium. ALSI’s objective was to utilise the F-35 IIP framework to transfer critical autonomous land systems technology and expertise to Finland through industrial, technological, and research cooperation. In parallel, ALSI strengthened the technological development and internationalisation pathways of Finnish small and medium-sized enterprises by building credible interfaces to global OEM ecosystems.
ALSI successfully brought together a critical mass of Finnish companies and research institutes to create attractive Indirect IP opportunities for F-35 OEMs in the autonomous land systems domain.
As a result, autonomous land systems were embedded as programme elements in each participating OEM package. From a total pipeline of 35 identified initiatives, two projects advanced into the F-35 programme’s implementation phase. XD Solutions assumed the coordinator role in 2020 and concluded its mandate in summer 2022, following Finland’s F-35 selection.
Industrial Participation (IP) in Defence Procurements
During the F-35 industrial participation coordination period (2020–2022), participation was open to Finnish companies and research organisations.
The participation projects focused on technologies critical to national security and strategic industrial know-how, including:
- Management of multi-technology systems
- Cybersecurity and encryption
- Artificial intelligence and autonomous systems
- Structures, materials, and logistics
- Directed energy
- C4ISTAR
