Oona Huhtala joins XD Solutions as Project Manager

Oona Huhtala has joined XD Solutions as Project Manager. She brings a unique combination of commercial business experience, reserve officer training and academic expertise in defence innovation.

Before joining XD Solutions, Oona worked in commercial and financial roles while researching Finland’s defence innovation system at Millog as part of her Master’s studies. Her work focused on one of the key challenges facing the sector: connecting innovative technologies with real operational needs.

At XD Solutions, Oona contributes to the development of the Digital Defence Ecosystem (DDE), with a particular focus on NATO collaboration, cooperation with the Finnish Defence Forces and international stakeholder engagement.

Background

Oona’s path into defence began during her military service, where she discovered a strong interest in combining business development with national security.

Her subsequent research into Finland’s defence innovation ecosystem reinforced a practical observation: Finland has world-class expertise and technology, but innovation only creates value when companies, end users and public organisations work closely together.

“One of the biggest challenges is connecting innovative companies with the real needs of end users. Building those connections is essential for turning technologies into capabilities.”

Role at XD Solutions

As Project Manager, Oona supports XD Solutions’ work in ecosystem development and international collaboration. Her responsibilities include cooperation with NATO organisations, the Finnish Defence Forces and international partners, as well as facilitating projects that bring together companies, research organisations and public stakeholders.

Her work reflects XD Solutions’ mission of helping Finnish defence and dual-use companies develop international business through collaboration.

“Trust and relationships are extremely important in defence. The better we connect companies, researchers, authorities and international partners, the more opportunities we create for everyone involved.”

Looking Ahead

Finland’s NATO membership has created new opportunities for Finnish technology companies to participate in international capability development.

According to Oona, Finland already has an excellent reputation abroad for practical engineering, technological expertise and high-quality solutions. The next step is ensuring that Finnish companies become even more visible and better connected internationally.

“I believe the structures supporting defence innovation and exports will continue to mature. At the same time, collaboration across organisations and borders will become an even greater competitive advantage.”
